The Pukeko
Tucked away and surrounded by an amazing orchard, birds and plant life, Robyn Forbes creates a gorgeous range of Art Blocks from the inspiration she gains at her home in Opotiki.
Robyn Forbes has transformed the Pukeko into a beautiful piece of art.
She has developed a process to protect her paintings in resin, producing gorgeous prints as mounted art blocks, this makes them ideal for sending overseas as a gift or souvenir.
The Pukeko
The New Zealand Pukeko is a subspecies of the Purple Swamphen native to the Australasian area. Greek translations means 'purple black', though they are more blue than purple.
The New Zealand Pukeko is slightly larger than the Australian Swamphen of the same subspecies. The Pukeko is beginning to lose its ability to fly, even now, when threatened it will often walk away from danger rather than fly. When it does fly, it has a rather clumsy take off and landing. It tends to prefer short distances.
Often seen alone or in groups of 2 or 3 foraging for food beside the motorway or near roadside ditches, and sometimes even collecting grit. In a study of free range birds, the preferred color of grit was red, followed by yellow and lastly blue, even though the red grit was less common on the road side.
