Hei Matau are commonly worn in New Zealand, as they represent strength, prosperity, and fertility. However, each Hei Matau is as unique as its creator. This Hei Matau is called Manu meaning Bird, as the curve of the hook echoes the shape of a self-satisfied kereru, or wood pigeon, sitting on a branch. Manu is another link to legend, as birds were traditionally thought to be the messengers of the gods.
