Ruru
The Ruru is also known as the Morepork. Widespread in New Zealand the Morepork has a every distinctive night call.
Morepork are superb night hunters. Their soft edged feathers enable them to fly through the air silently and without warning. They have excellent hearing, their dislike faces direct the slightest sound into their large ear openings and their flexible necks allow them to rotate 270 degrees. Moreprok have huge eyes for optimum low light vision, which is where the Maori name Ruru comes from – Ruru meaning big eyes.
