Often called a living fossil, the Tuatara is a native New Zealand reptile which lived at the same time as the dinosaurs and still exists today. The Tuatara is a symbol of longevity, as they can live to be well over a hundred years old. Tuatara are considered to be Taonga, meaning special treasures and are now quite rare. Paua, a native New Zealand shell fish with a stunning multicolored shell, was thought to be associated with the stars and is also Taonga.
